Rainwater harvesting operations of 4 islands contracted to Fenaka

Ministry of Environment has handed over the operations of rainwater harvesting systems in four islands to Fenaka Corporation Limited.

Rainwater harvesting systems were established in 8 islands of Huvadhu Atoll under the project titled “Supporting Vulnerable Communities in the Maldives to Climate Change Induced Water Shortages”. The project is conducted by the Ministry of Environment and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under the funding of Green Climate Fund (GCF).

During a ceremony held on March 10, Fenaka Corporation was contracted to operate the rainwater systems in 4 of the 8 islands where the systems were established. As such, the operations of rainwater harvesting systems in Nilandhoo, Kondey, Maamendhoo and Faresmaathoda have been officially handed over to Fenaka.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan said the project is part of efforts to ensure a sustainable supply of clean drinking water in islands where clean water becomes scarce during the dry season. He noted the quality of water supplied through this system will be regulated by the Utility Regulatory Authority.

The rainwater harvesting systems were installed by the Water Engineering Company Limited of the UAE. Shah Technical Consultants of India were the design and supervision consultants of the project.
