Six companies express interest to develop Vilufushi Airport

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed six companies have expressed interest to undertake the development of an airport in Vilufushi, Thaa Atoll, upon announcing the project.

Speaking at an event held for the people of Thaa Atoll as part of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign for the upcoming local council elections, President Solih reiterated his commitment to develop an airport in Vilufushi. The President revealed six companies have submitted their Expression of Interest (EOI) at the preliminary stage of tender. He said the companies will be shortlisted soon to submit their proposals.

Establishing an airport within a 30-minute trip of every inhabited island of the Maldives is an important pledge of the administration. Under this policy, the administration has announced projects to develop airports in Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Bileiyfahi in Shaviyani Atoll and Makunudhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, in addition to Vilufushi.

The administration has also recently contracted airport development projects in Muli, Meemu Atoll and Faresmaathoda, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). President Solih has also pledged to develop an additional airport in Raa Atoll.
