Over USD 775 million worth of projects contracted by the current administration

Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer reveals the government has contracted projects worth over USD 775 million through national tender in the two years that the current administration has been in office.

Speaking at a ceremony held to sign the contracts for the development of water and sewerage systems in 34 islands under the assistance of the Exim Bank of India, Finance Minister Ameer said the government has continued its development projects across the country despite the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic. The finance minister revealed the current administration has contracted 310 projects worth over USD 775 million, which is significantly higher than the number of projects contracted by any other previous administration. He added this shows the priority allocated by the government to fulfill the essential needs of the public.

The finance minister highlighted the progress that will be achieved in islands following such projects, noting the establishment of essential services will help to develop local tourism as well as several other sectors. He said the projects are directly linked to regional economic development.

While the government has contracted projects worth over USD 775 million, many of the projects have been awarded to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) under new policies enacted to empower SMEs. Meanwhile, local councils have also been given the authority to award certain projects under the amendments brought to the Decentralisation Act.
