Ministry of Environment has handed over the newly developed drainage system in Addu City Feydhoo to Addu City Council.
The drainage system was officially handed over by Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan at a ceremony held in Feydhoo. Speaking to PSM News, Environment Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan said the drainage system was not initially designed to cover all flood-prone areas, adding the project was revised and completed in December last year. The minister attributed the delay in handing over the drainage system to the city council to the travel restrictions over the COVID-19 pandemic.
Feydhoo is the district most affected by floods in Addu City. Last year, many households in Feydhoo were flooded causing damages to property and other equipment.
Mayor of Addu City Abdulla Sodiq said the drainage system is designed to divert water from flooded areas, which will greatly reduce damages during severe weather.
The USD 1.5-million project began in July 2018 and was completed in December 2020. The drainage system was designed by Water Solutions Private Limited and installed by Senok Trade Combine Private Limited.
