NDA allows private contractors to operate drug rehabilitation centres

National Drug Agency (NDA) allows private contractors to operate drug rehabilitation centres.

The decision was made in accordance with the Narcotics Act of the Maldives. NDA stated contractors will be allowed to establish drug rehabilitation centres in islands with no such facility.

In addition, NDA said the five government-run drug rehabilitation centres can also be transferred to private parties. These centers are the Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll, the Halfway House in Hulhumale', the Drug Treatment and Detoxification Centre in Fuvahmulah City, as well as the drug detoxification and community rehabilitation centres in Addu City Hithadhoo, Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

NDA will be conducting an information session on April 25 at 1100hrs. Interested parties are required to submit their proposals at the NDA main office in Male' before June 25.

The government has been working to increase rehabilitation centers and improve treatment for victims of addiction.
