New WHO Representative to the Maldives makes introductory call on Foreign Minister Shahid

The newly appointed Representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to the Maldives Dr. Nazneen Anwar has paid an introductory call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, to present her Letter of Appointment.

During the call, Minister Shahid and the Representative discussed the role of WHO in the Maldives in supporting the government in its efforts to reform the health sector and in strengthening the health system. They also conversed on ways to strengthen cooperation between the Government of the Maldives and WHO. Their discussion also highlighted the numerous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic and social recovery efforts that are underway.

During the call, Foreign Minister Shahid thanked the WHO for the generous assistance provided to the Maldives during the pandemic, and noted the indispensable role of WHO in overcoming the challenges that we are facing now in addressing the health emergency, as well as in minimizing the long-term socio-economic impact of the global pandemic.

WHO has been an active contributor to the health sector development of the Maldives since 1965.
