COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives exceed 27,000

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed 253 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the Maldives on April 25, taking the total number of cases recorded in the country to 27,874.

With the latest update, the total number of active cases have risen to 3,485. There are currently 123 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals or medical facilities. So far, a total of 71 people have passed away from COVID-19.

Furthermore, HPA has placed Gan and Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll under monitoring after new COVID-19 positive cases were found in the Maandhoo cluster. In addition, 25 new positive COVID-19 cases have been found in Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll, raising the total number of positive cases in the island to 107. HPA is currently conducting contact tracing tests, and many houses in the island have been placed under quarantine due to the increasing number of cases.

Meanwhile, Baa Atoll Hospital has also revealed 71 positive COVID-19 cases have been found in Eydhafushi. The first positive case in Eydhafushi was found on April 19, and subsequent testing have found many residents, including children, positive for COVID-19.

Under the vaccination programme, 290,014 people have received the first dose of the vaccine and 70,983 people have received the second dose. The inoculation drive is conducted at 11 centres and by 4 mobile vaccination teams in the Greater Male' Region in addition to 240 vaccination centres across the atolls.
