MIT to conduct five technical and vocational courses

Ministry of Higher Education has signed an agreement with Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) to conduct five technical and vocational courses.

Under the agreement, MIT will conduct National Certificate III courses for Boat Operation, Jewelry Design, Snorkeling Guide, Sports Fishing Guide, and Surf Guide. The ministry stated the courses will teach and prepare a total of 100 students for the labour market.

The courses are part of the Skills for Resilient Workforce programme, which is an initiative by the government to develop the skills of the youth workforce needed for the Maldivian labour market. The courses were selected based on a comprehensive Training Needs Analysis conducted in 2019, in which the ministry determined the required Level III Courses needed in the tourism sector, tourism-related construction, ICT and other fields in the analysis.

The ministry stated a total of 1,200 students will be allocated in the relevant fields, which are 600 students for the tourism sector, 200 for ICT sector, and 400 for tourism-related construction. Around 33% of the course slots is allocated for women.
