Government to repatriate Maldivian family stranded after fleeing to Syria

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated it is working to repatriate a woman and her children who became stranded after fleeing to Syria.

MPS stated the woman and her children were caught and detained by Turkish authorities inside the country. A team from MPS is now in Turkey to confirm their identities and will also be working the Maldivian authorities to complete the necessary paperwork to return them to the Maldives, since the family has no official documentations.

The woman had four children from two Maldivian men who had participated in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Syria. MPS stated the police team is confirming the children's parentage after she informed them her children were born in Afghanistan and Syria.

MPS also stated the family, who are showing signs of psychological trauma, will be taken to the National Rehabilitation Centre once returned to the Maldives, and MPS will be investigating the case to take the necessary legal action.
