Ministry of Higher Education of the Maldives has signed a partnership agreement with Chevening Awards of UK to provide co-funded scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students.
The agreement for the Chevening/Maldives scholarship programme was signed by Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan and the British High Commissioner to the Maldives Caron Rohsler. Under the agreement, the scholarships will be co-funded by the Maldivian government and Chevening, increasing the number of available scholarships for Maldivian students.
The higher education ministry stated scholarships will be granted for programmes which come under the sectors listed in the Training Needs Analysis of the government. Scholarships are to be granted for postgraduate students undertaking a one-year programme in an accredited university of the UK.
Ministry of Higher Education has been working on increasing educational and training opportunities for locals in various different fields which are important for national development. The ministry has set a target of training 1,200 people across 7 high-priority sectors every year. This includes 600 people in 600 people in the field of tourism, 200 people in the field of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and 400 people in the field of tourism-related construction.
