COVID-19 cases in resorts at a record low in May: Tourism Minister

Minister of Tourism Abdulla Mausoom has stated COVID-19 cases reported in resorts and liveaboards have been at a record low in May.

In a tweet, the tourism minister said that, despite the spike in positive cases in the Greater Male' Region, there have been few cases in resorts and liveaboards. Minister Mausoom commended the tourism industry and the ministry for their implementation of strong safety protocols and guidelines of Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The latest statistics of the tourism ministry from May 13 shows 0.27% of tourists that visited the Maldives so far this year were positive for COVID-19. Statistics from 2020 shows that 0.19% of the total tourist arrivals were positive for COVID-19 last year.

Furthermore, the tourism ministry is conducting inspections on tourism establishments to check whether the health guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are followed in such places. The ministry stated the inspections will be focused on tourism services in inhabited islands due to the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives. Inspectors will be checking whether employees at guesthouses and other tourism establishments are adhering to the guidelines on preventing the spread of COVID-19.
