Health Protection Agency (HPA) has extended the measures imposed across the Maldives to contain the spread of COVID-19 to another 14 days.
Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, HPA has strengthened measures taken against COVID-19 from May 5 onwards. The circular issued on May 3 announced seven major measures to curb the spread on COVID-19. As such, the measures taken by the government include closing government offices and schools in the Greater Male' Region, in addition to banning movement of land vehicles in the Greater Male' Region from 0000hrs to 0400hrs from May 5 to 10.
However, a tighter curfew was imposed in the Greater Male' region on May 12 banning any movement from 1600hrs to 0400hrs. Moreover, the parks, sports centres, and tracks are to remain closed, while only permitted sporting events will proceed as scheduled.
The government has also suspended the ease of restrictions for vaccinated travellers, and travel within the Maldives is only allowed during emergency situations. Travellers from Male' to the islands will have to complete a 10-day quarantine, and travellers from India will need to have a negative PCR test and complete a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.
The COVID-19 situation in the country has gradually worsened since the beginning of this year, with more deaths reported per day and cases maintained above 500-1000 daily.
