Ministry of Health has extended the State of Public Health Emergency in the Maldives for another month.
The health ministry said the State of Public Health Emergency imposed in the country last year has been extended until July 3. A circular signed by Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem stated the decision to extend the State of Public Health Emergency was made to take the necessary measures to control the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives.
The Maldives initially declared a State of Public Health Emergency on March 12 last year. The State of Public Health Emergency has been extended 15 times since then.
This past month has seen a record surge of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives. During the month of May, the country recorded more COVID-19 cases and deaths than any other previous month. There are currently over 22,000 active cases across the Maldives, including 213 patients admitted in hospitals or medical facilities. 173 people have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives.
