Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced construction of a fire building in Faresmathoda Airport.
Dubai-based Gulf Cobla concluded the land reclamation to construct the airport in Faresmaathodaa in 2019. The airport development project was not contracted until November last year, although the land reclamation and shore protection were completed in 2019.
Faresmaathoda Airport is being developed upon reclamation of several small islands in the lagoon to create a sufficient land area for the airport. A total of 19.9 hectares of land have been reclaimed for the airport, with an 888-metre rock boulder revetment protecting the shoreline of the reclaimed area. The state-owned company aims to complete the project by November 11.
The airport development project includes the construction of a 1,200-metre runway, taxiway, apron, and service roads. The total cost of the project is USD 9.4 million.
Developing the airport in Faresmaathoda would ease travel and pave the way for greater progress and better tourism opportunities in the southern atolls.
