Climate vulnerable nations need more international support: Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has highlighted the need for more financial support to climate vulnerable nations in order to effectively tackle the impact of climate change.

The speaker made the remarks in his address at the 1st Climate Vulnerables Summit of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). The summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, and attended by leaders and finance ministers of V20, the group of climate vulnerable nations.

Addressing the participants of the summit, Speaker Nasheed noted climate change is a frequent topic of discussion in the international community. However, the speaker said it is now time to deliver more action, starting with more financial support for countries susceptible to the effects of climate change. He called for enhanced cooperation among the international community to effectively address the challenges of climate change.

Speaker Nasheed had been appointed as the CVF Ambassador for Ambition in July 2020. He was chosen for his role due to his efforts to communicate the impacts of climate change on small island nations during his reign as President from 2008 to 2012. He also received global recognition for his efforts to reduce global carbon emissions in COP15.
