Over 4,000 students vaccinated under new programme

Ministry of Education has revealed over 4,000 students have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine under the new vaccination programme launched for children aged 12-17.

Earlier this week, the government began administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children between the ages of 12 and 17. The children are administered the vaccine through their respective schools.

The education ministry revealed 4,973 students have been vaccinated so far under the new programme. The ministry revealed there are about 40,000 students between the age of 12-17 in schools across the Maldives.

The education ministry further noted students are not required to wait in long queues at vaccination centres. As such, the ministry said about 100 students are vaccinated within every 30 minutes. The ministry also revealed doctors and healthcare workers are active at every vaccination centre to tend to any possible emergencies and to ensure the safety and well-being of the students that are being vaccinated.

As per the latest statistics of Health Protection Agency (HPA), over 356,000 people have been administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the Maldives, while over 297,000 people have been administered both doses. The government aims to inoculate 90% of the population eligible for vaccination by the end of this month.
