President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attended the reception for world leaders hosted by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson. The reception was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland, as a side-event of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
President Solih joined more than 120 heads of government and heads of state for the special VVIP reception.
The president earlier delivered the national statement at the World Leaders Summit at COP26, calling on world leaders to step up their efforts to make more ambitious climate commitments and to uphold obligations. He also participated in a high-level panel discussion for Commonwealth nations called Climate Vulnerable Forum and a side event called Rediscovering Nitrogen which aimed to re-evaluate nitrogen for climate and environmental action.
President Solih is accompanied at COP26 by a delegation of high-level officials including Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Aminath Shauna.
COP26 is being held to bring together all relevant stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of measures to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. COP26 is also an opportunity for the Maldives to address the nation's sustainable development plans on the global stage.
The summit is being attended by leaders from more than 190 countries, with thousands of negotiators, representatives of governments, businesses, and the public attending.
