Gov’t has instilled peace and harmony in society: VP

Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated the government has protected the right to free expression and instilled peace and harmony in the country, in contrast to three years ago. He made the remarks in his speech at the ceremony to inaugurate the road development project in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Naseem said a vast majority of people had worked together to elect President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih three years ago and that result of their work has been overwhelmingly positive. The vice president also noted that the previous government had raised terrorism-related charges against President Solih, despite him being a non-violent person who never spoke ill of anyone. He noted that the previous government did not hesitate to jail critics, including former presidents and long-serving civil servants. However, he said the current government has worked to instill peace and harmony in the country and has protected the right of individuals to express themselves without fear of punishment.

Furthermore, Vice President Naseem said the government has prioritised fulfilling pledges, despite the challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the government has shown significant positive results in its work to develop the sectors of education, health, and tourism.

Additionally, Vice President Naseem said the government is prioritising improving public transport to ease travel and pave way for faster development in the atolls. He added that citizens should be vigilant of the workings of the government and should never relinquish the benefits they have received from establishing peace and harmony in the country.
