Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Limited (MWSC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment to train 73 youth across its first two batches under the National Apprenticeship Programme.

The MoU was signed by Managing Director of MWSC Hassan Shah and Minister of State for Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Hussain Ismail on December 1. Under the MoU, MWSC will take in 73 youth across its first two batches under the apprenticeship programme, to work at the company for 6 months and acquire the necessary field skills and training. MWSC said each trainee will receive an allowance during the programme.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director Shah said MWSC hopes to facilitate more employment opportunities for local youth through this programme. He expressed hope the programme will help to build a capable workforce among local youth.

Meanwhile, State Minister Ismail noted the objective of the programme is to provide training for individuals who have finished school and are not pursuing further studies. He added although the ministry had targeted to train 3,000 youth under this programme this year, the target could not be achieved due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The six-month apprenticeship programme provides a certificate equivalent to Level 3 of the Maldives National Qualifications Framework (MNQF).
