MTCC commences shore protection project in Buruni

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the shore protection project in Buruni, Thaa Atoll.

MTCC announced fieldwork of the shore protection project in Buruni is underway, starting with dredging of borrow areas from which sand will be sourced to pump to the eroding areas. Under this project, 21,181 cubic metres of sand will be pumped to the eroding areas of Buruni.

Buruni has been suffering from the effects of erosion since 2004. President of Buruni Island Council Adam Mohamed said both the northern and southern shores of the island are eroding, noting some houses in the northern areas of the island are now less than 10 feet away from the shoreline. He added swell surges lead to flooding of houses in such areas.

The shore protection project in Buruni was contracted to MTCC on September 23. The cost of the project is USD 1.86 million.
