Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed the first case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in the Maldives.
HPA stated the case was reported from genomic sequencing conducted on a positive sample of a tourist from South Africa. The tourist arrived in the Maldives on November 27 and was found to be positive for the Omicron variant after a sample was taken abroad on November 30 for genomic sequencing.
HPA stated a certain number of samples are tested with the help of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and that these samples are usually positive for the Delta variant. WHO has designated the Omicron variant as a variant of concern based on the evidence that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, especially on how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes.
The Government of the Maldives has strengthened its measures following the emergence of the Omicron variant by banning travellers from seven African countries. HPA has stated travel to the Maldives has been banned for travellers from South Africa, Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe.
Maldivians and work permit holders who arrived from these countries will be required to undergo 14 days of quarantine and PCR testing before entering the Maldives. Additionally, travellers from these countries who are currently staying in the Maldives are required to undergo PCR testing, and those returning to their country are required to undergo PCR testing before they leave.
