MTCC mobilises Kolhufushi shore protection project site

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the shore protection site in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll.

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to conduct the project in November 2021. The state-owned company is tasked with completing the project within one year at a cost of USD 1.5 million. The scope of the project involves dredging operations of 9,683cbm as well as the construction of a 202m breakwater and a 519m revetment.

Speaking to PSM News, Vice President of Kolhufushi Island Council Adam Fayaz said the residents are greatly expecting the completion of the shore protection project. Kolhufushi residents had welcomed and hosted a luncheon for the MTCC team that arrived on the island.

Kolhufushi has a population of 1,433 residents and is one of the many islands in the Maldives suffering from the impact of erosion. Other government projects ongoing in Kolhufushi include the construction of 100 housing units, construction of a new building for Fenaka Corporation Limited, and establishment of a water supply system.

MTCC is carrying out 64 projects across the Maldives, including nine shore protection projects, and has completed six shore protection projects in the past three years.
