Gov't has expanded electricity services by two-fold

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the government has expanded electricity services in the country by two-fold in the last three years. He made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the new power station and office building of Fenaka Corporation Limited in Magoodhoo, Noonu Atoll.

Speaking at the event, President Solih said his administration is conducting work for national development with the citizens under a decentralisation policy. The president said his highest priority is to establish basic services in the islands and that there is no longer any island left in the government's initiative to establish basic services. He said the new power station established in Magoodhoo will alleviate many of the challenges faced by the island residents.

Furthermore, President Solih noted the poor state of electricity services in the country when he came into office and said that his administration has upgraded the capacity from 70 megawatts to 140 megawatts. The president highlighted the work of Fenaka in upgrading electricity services and contributing to the government's goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. He said the Maldives generated 16 megawatts of electricity from solar energy when he came into office but is now generating 20 megawatts. He added that his administration aims to increase the capacity of solar energy to 52 megawatts by the end of its term.

President Solih is on a two-day tour of the Noonu Atoll. He is accompanied on the visit by some members of his cabinet and senior government officials.
