Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem has stated the project to develop a tertiary hospital in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, will open for tender in the second quarter of the year. He made the statement while responding to questions at the Parliament of the Maldives.
Answering questions posed by parliamentarians, Health Minister Naseem said funds for the project have been allocated with a loan from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. The minister said a company has been contracted to design the 100-bed tertiary hospital in Thinadhoo.
Furthermore, Minister Naseem said the project to upgrade the Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo is 95% complete. He highlighted the project costs USD2.1 million and the scope of the work includes the expansion of the outpatient department, as well as the construction of the labour wing and four private rooms.
Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital was established in 2000 with specialties including medical, surgical, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatric care. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was tasked with upgrading the hospital and renovating the emergency response department in late 2019.
