President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has highlighted the importance of identifying issues and challenges faced by teachers.
In a meeting held in the President’s Office with the Education Sector Research Group constituted to identify issues faced by teachers in the education sector, President Solih spoke about the importance of conducting research in the education sector, stating that it would assist tremendously in identifying issues and challenges faced by teachers. He added that he was hopeful that the research would significantly contribute to solving those issues via policy changes based on the findings and upgrade the quality of education.
During the meeting, the Education Sector Research Group presented the progress of the research and held a lengthy in-depth discussion on the topics discovered thus far. As such, remuneration of teachers, their workload and work-life balance, rights and dignity of teachers, work facilities, training and development, and how the educational sector evolves were among the subjects discussed.
Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali, and the Special Advisor on Social Policy at the President’s Office Dr. Mustafa Lutfi accompanied the president at the meeting.
Previously, President Solih revealed that the government aimed to conduct research into the state of the education sector and the teaching profession to determine the reason for the scarcity of permanent Maldivian educators. A research group comprising six members was tasked with completing the research within three months on October 31, 2021.
The members of the group include Chairperson Dr. Ahmed Ali Manik as a member representing the field of Education Policy and Planning, Dr. Ali Najeeb as a member representing the field of Human Resources, Dr. Aishath Shafina as a member representing the field of Sociology, Aminath Zubair as a member representing the field of training, Abdulla Zakariyya as a member representing the field of Finance and Abdulla Rasheed as a member representing the field of Education.
