Vandhoo Waste Management Centre to be operationalised by June

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has revealed preparations are ongoing to operationalise the waste management centre in Vandhoo, Raa Atoll by June.

Speaking at the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister Shauna stated waste management centres are to be established in three different regions across the country, along with waste transfer stations. She said the ministry is working on bringing the waste management centre in Vandhoo to operation by June, enabling waste from Noonu Atoll, Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll and Lhaviyani Atoll to be managed sustainably.

The project to establish a waste management centre in Vandhoo is carried out under the aid of the World Bank. The facility will cater to 45 islands and 47 resorts in four atolls. The facility utilises modern waste management techniques and machinery, including an incinerator capable of managing 40 tonnes of waste every day.

The government plans to establish waste management centres in Thilafushi in the Greater Male' Region and Addu City. In addition, waste transfer stations will also be established in all regions to collect and hold the waste until it can be transferred to the waste management centres.
