Director-General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakur has stated COVID-19 cannot be designated as a common disease in the Maldives.
At a press conference, Director-General Maimoona said COVID-19 is still designated worldwide as a pandemic and that the Maldives need to remain vigilant and be prepared for any rise in cases. She also highlighted the hard work of health workers in lowering the number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the decision to lift the State of Public Health Emergency in force since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. After consulting with public health experts, President Solih made the announcement in a televised address to the nation, lifting the state of public health emergency declared two years ago.
Over174,000 cases have been reported across the country and 297 people have died from COVID-19 since it was first detected in the Maldives in March 2020.
