Resilience is about preparing for future impact: Environment Minister

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated resilience is about investing in people and preparing younger generations for future impact. She made the remarks in her statement at the session “Societal Resilience: The Future of Education, Health and Technology” held as part of the World Government Sumitt 2022 in Dubai, UAE.

In her statement, Minister Shauna said the lack of focus on quality is an urgent problem, noting enough analyses are being done to identify whether the appropriate skills required to meet new challenges were being fostered in younger generations. The minister highlighted the efforts being undertaken by the Maldivian government to develop human resources and the challenges faced by the country while undertaking these efforts. She also spoke about specific projects and programmes undertaken to develop the education and healthcare sectors of the Maldives.

In her speech, Minister Shauna noted the Maldives has become reliant on technology for development, and highlighted the administration’s transformation process to a digital identification system. Emphasising the importance of technology in development, the minister said technology should be utilised in adaptation strategies to monitor what is happening to Maldives’ coast and coral reefs by using drone and satellite technology to gather data, and then utilise this information to make evidence-based decisions.

The World Government Summit 2022 brings together thought leaders, global experts and decision makers from around the world to share and contribute to the development of tools, policies, and models that are essential in shaping future governments. The summit provides a unique platform to showcase and exchange best practices and smart solutions to challenges that nations face.
