Hoarafushi Airport to be separated from main island due to erosion

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to separate Hoarafushi Airport from the main island of Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll, to prevent erosion.

Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to resolve the issue of erosion caused by the airport’s connection to Hoarafushi. Major reclamation work had been done before the development of the airport, however, issues of erosion have been occurring on the part of the island that is connected to the reclaimed land.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said the decision has been made to connect Hoarafushi to the airport with a causeway bridge instead of reclaimed land. He said the state-owned company is currently in the design phase and will begin fieldwork within two months. He highlighted the importance of planning, and said the design work is being conducted by engineers from MTCC and the planning ministry.

MTCC stated the material needed for the causeway are being brought in from Europe and is scheduled to arrive in June. The company is also building coastal protection structures and is expected to complete the structures within two months.
