Vice President inaugurates Road Safety Fair

Vice President Faisal Naseem has inaugurated the Road Safety Fair being held by Health Protection Agency (HPA) as part of Global Road Safety Week.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fair, Vice President Naseem said one of the administration’s top priorities upon assuming office was to improve road safety by conducting numerous road safety-related activities and changing traffic regulations. The vice president also highlighted the importance of exercising personal responsibility in adhering to the road safety regulations and setting the example for children.

Furthermore, Vice President Naseem said that adhering to the road safety regulations does not require a huge commitment and that the issue traffic congestion should not be an excuse to violate the regulations. He further noted that the government is expanding bus services and that the minibus service will begin next month. He expressed confidence that this will ease traffic congestion and provide a safe environment for pedestrians.

Also at the ceremony, Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru said 1,154 road accidents were recorded in the first four months of this year and that one victim had passed away in one of the incidents. She said that the road safety fair aims to provide information on first-aid, mental health, and traffic regulations as well as increasing public enthusiasm for cycling.

Various institutions are scheduled to hold panel discussions at the week-long road safety fair. A lucky draw will also be held to award helmets to 54 participants.
