HPA advises public to take precautions due to rise in COVID-19 cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged individuals to wear masks at large gatherings and to take precautions while travelling due to the rise in COVID-19 cases.

In a press release, HPA stated that COVID-19 cases are increasing in various parts of the Maldives and other countries and that cases increased by 185% in the third week of June compared to the second week. It noted that hospitalisations have also increased and that three COVID-19-related deaths were recorded this month.

Furthermore, HPA stated that individuals need to take extra precautions at this time, as numerous trips and events are being planned. As such, it advised individuals to wear masks at large gatherings, closed public spaces, and health facilities, and to self-isolate if showing signs of illness. It also urged individuals to avoid visiting patients at health facilities unless absolutely necessary and to complete the vaccine doses as soon as possible.

Additionally, HPA advised travellers to check the COVID-19 situation at their destination and to postpone trips to places reporting a high number of cases. It also urged travellers to check the COVID-19 policies at their destination and complete the vaccine doses, and obtain a vaccine certificate and insurance prior to travel.

HPA further advised organisers to hold events online or invite as few attendees as possible and to postpone unimportant events. It also highlighted that individuals getting vaccinated for COVID-19 and influenza will minimise the likelihood of an outbreak.
