State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun setting up an additional reverse osmosis (RO) plant in Gulhi, Kaafu Atoll to address issues in producing clean water. STELCO has already transported a 65-tonne RO plant to the island.
The Government of the Maldives inaugurated the water supply and sewerage systems in Gulhi in February this year, with two RO plants, one rainwater treatment plant, and three 200-tonne water storage containers. However, the island is facing difficulties in producing enough water. STELCO said it is hoping to solve the issue following the installation of the new RO plant on the island.
Meanwhile, the President of Gulhi Island Council Moosa Safeel said STELCO has informed that there are difficulties in producing enough water although the residents of the island have not faced difficulties in accessing water. He said the new RO plant is being installed to solve any issues that may arise as many people will visit the island during the upcoming Eid holidays.
