MIFCO records increase in fish purchases in southern region

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has recorded an increase in fish purchases in the southern region of the country.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ismail Fauzee said MIFCO recorded a low number of fish purchases in the past two months, during which fewer fishing vessels were active due to rainy weather in a large part of the Maldives. He said that fish stock was also reduced at MIFCO stores as a result. He, however, said that fishing in the southern region has improved while fishing in the northern region has yet to recover.

MIFCO has been purchasing an average of 80 tonnes of fish daily in the past few days and recorded fish purchases totalling 180 tonnes on August 17. The state-owned company also began offering higher rates to fishermen earlier in the year.
