USD85 million spent on education in the past four years

Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has revealed that USD85 million has been spent on the education sector in the past four years. She made the remarks while speaking at an information session at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Congress.

At the MDP Congress, Minister Aishath said that MDP had spent the most on developing the education sector and commenced significantly more education-related projects than the previous administration. She detailed that 135 classrooms and 15 multipurpose halls were built between 2014 and 2018 but that 1,288 classrooms and 81 multipurpose halls are being built by the current administration. She added that the previous administration had commenced 81 education-related projects while the current administration began 338 projects. She also said that the current administration has so far spent USD85 million on education while the previous administration spent USD61 million.

Furthermore, Minister Aishath said the current administration allocated state funds for 216 projects to standardise all schools in the Maldives, out of which 44 projects have been completed and 89 are ongoing. She said that currently 155 out of the 216 government schools in the Maldives now teach at the same standard.

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof also shared information on their respective work at the MDP Congress.
