President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has vowed to provide more resources and assign more doctors to Muli Regional Hospital and develop an extension building. He made the statement during a meeting with the residents of Muli, Meemu Atoll.
Speaking to residents of Muli, President Solih detailed the administration's policy on developing the health sector in the Maldives, and the plan to develop Muli Regional Hospital. The president noted the hospital needs more resources and doctors and said that an extension building will be built as well. He said the development of the hospital was delayed after the work on the development projects was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He, however, said the Ministry of Health formulated a plan to develop the hospital during the period.
Also at the meeting, Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem said that Muli Regional Hospital will be developed by the first quarter of 2023. He said that new services are already being introduced at the hospital and that it will be developed in accordance with the wishes of the island council and residents.
Muli is the administrative capital of Meemu Atoll. Residents of the atoll are reliant on the medical services provided by Muli Regional Hospital, which is located on the island. However, residents have expressed concern over the deteriorating quality of the services, as the hospital has remained underdeveloped for a number of years.
Muli Regional Hospital has not seen any major project to expand its facilities during its 30 years. However, hospital visits have increased in the past few years due to the introduction of new services such as radiology and internal medicine. The hospital now includes services provided by a gynecologist, pediatrician, anesthesiologist, and two medical officials.
