Maldives launches first ever National Policy on Physical Activity

The Maldives has launched the first ever National Policy on Physical Activity for Healthier Living. The national policy was officially launched by Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali, and Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof.

The main objective of formulating the National Guidelines for Physical Activity is to promote an active lifestyle, which is a key intervention for controlling non-communicable diseases, and to raise awareness and familiarise the public with physical activity and exercise for a healthy lifestyle. The policy is based on four main principles which include working together with political figures and other relevant bodies to change people's attitudes towards exercise, raise awareness of physical activity and educate people about healthy living.

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Naseem said that one of the biggest health issues in the Maldives is lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases. He went on to say that studies show that these habits are widespread in society, noting that the number of people suffering from cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung diseases, and mental illnesses is now very high in the Maldives. He said the only solution to such diseases without additional expenses is to stay active, exercise regularly, and maintain certain body weight.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Education Minister Aishath said that formulating an exercise policy and bringing technical standards to the people would benefit all those involved. The minister said that one of the health checkups and health screenings conducted in schools showed that many children do not have the optimal height and weight. She said that it is very important to make the school period a place where learning can be conducted in a healthy manner. She assured that work will be done to build a healthy, intelligent, and talented generation together with other agencies involved by increasing the opportunities for sports and exercise for children.

The goal of physical activity policies and standards is to reduce the proportion of people who are not adequately physically active to 10% by organising opportunities for exercise in a safe environment. In addition, building and raising awareness of people in the field and working together with relevant sectors is also the main basis of the policy.
