Ministry of Health has signed agreements to upgrade the health centres in Gemanafushi in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Henbadhoo in Noonu Atoll, and Maakurathu in Raa Atoll.
The health ministry contracted Veeru Group Private Limited to construct an extension building for the Gemanafushi Health Centre. The company is tasked with completing the project within four months at a cost of USD257,000. The health centre began providing 24-hour service in 2021 and has been facing challenges due to the lack of resources and space constraints.
The ministry has also signed agreements with a contractor to construct an extension building and outer wall for the Henbadhoo Health Centre, and to complete the construction of the extension building at the Maakurathu Health Centre. The government terminated the agreement with the previous contractor after it failed to complete the project in Maakurathu in 2021.
The government has been providing resources and developing health facilities in the atolls as part of the efforts to reduce the reliance on the Greater Male’ Region for health services. The government has also been working to reform the salary structure of health workers to retain experienced professionals in the atolls.
