The Maldives has begun preparing papers for the Transforming Education Summit 2022. The summit organised by the United Nations (UN) is scheduled to be held on September 19 in New York, the United States (US).
To prepare for the summit a consultation meeting was held with representation from relevant organisations. As such, the meeting focused on drafting papers to be submitted during the summit, identifying steps to be taken to expand education by 2030, and creating an environment conducive to inclusive education and lifelong learning. Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, and Special Advisor on Social Policy at the President's Office Musthafa Luthfee attended the opening ceremony of the meeting.
The government has appointed Dr. Mahumood Shauqee as the convener of the meetings. These meetings bring together more than 80 stakeholders including government ministries and offices related to education, youth and women development, health and social affairs, and students and parents, as well as companies and private organisations.
The Transforming Education Summit aims to promote cohesion and resolution in taking robust steps towards transforming education delivery between now and 2030, giving education a higher priority within the national vision. The summit is being held in the context of two very challenging issues: quality of education and the right to lifelong learning.
The UN has recommended that all member countries hold national-level consultation meetings involving their education stakeholders to prepare papers for the summit. The purpose of such meetings at the national level is to discuss and identify the post-COVID-19 education situation in the country among education stakeholders, as well as to identify steps to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It also involves ensuring the involvement and cooperation of all stakeholders to achieve these goals.
