The Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs has begun reviewing a motion submitted to address the difficulties in accessing medical treatment for people with infertility problems.
The motion submitted by Parliamentarian Meekail Ahmed Naseem was accepted by the Parliament of the Maldives with 45 votes in favour. The motion states the Maldives has established a national system of social healthcare insurance to ensure free medical care for all Maldivian citizens.
However, Meekail said it is a concern that even the most basic medicines are not available in the Maldives as part of the scheme. As such, the parliamentarian expressed concern that individuals facing infertility issues are not receiving proper treatment and medicine in the country. Therefore, he recommended that most basic treatments must be covered by the Aasandha healthcare insurance schemes.
Fertility problems are currently not treatable in the Maldives. Statistics show that a large number of people with infertility problems go abroad for treatment.
