Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, has recognised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's instrumental role in advancing the nation's fisheries sector, citing support for ice plants and cold storage facilities across key islands. His remarks followed the presentation of credentials by Yahya Hassan Alhqahtani, the newly appointed Saudi ambassador to the Maldives, to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held on Sunday at the President's Office.
In a post to social media, Minister Shiyam welcomed Ambassador Alhqahtani and affirmed the enduring rapport between the two countries. Describing the bond as a "growing friendship" that is valued by the Maldives, Minister Shiyam attributed recent improvements in the sector to Saudi support, highlighting significant progress made in fisheries development.
"The Maldives deeply values the growing friendship between our two nations. In the fisheries sector, Saudi Arabia’s generous support has been instrumental," Minister Shiyam stated. He underscored the importance of current infrastructure projects in reinforcing local economies and strengthening supply chains.
"With the development of ice plants and cold storage facilities underway across key islands, we are making real progress in strengthening our fisheries value chain and supporting island communities," the minister added. "We look forward to continued collaboration as we work together for shared prosperity and sustainable development."
Following the formal credential presentation, President Muizzu met with Ambassador Alhqahtani to discuss further opportunities for bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, the president expressed his gratitude for the valuable assistance and cooperation provided by the Saudi government to the Maldives, extending specific appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and King of Saudi Arabia, Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, as well as to the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
