Addu International Port development to begin in November

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has revealed the development of Addu International Port in Hithadhoo, Addu City, will begin in November.

Speaking to journalists, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shahid Ali provided details on the development of the regional ports being operated by MPL and said the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is preparing to redevelop the Addu International Port. He said the master plan, design, and environmental impact assessment (EIA) have been completed and approved. He added that MTCC has also been tasked with developing the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Port and a survey is being conducted before commencing the project.

The project to develop the existing Hithadhoo Regional Port as the Addu International Port involves the relocation of the existing berthing area and the construction of a breakwater to protect the new berthing area. The main issue faced at the existing Hithadhoo Regional Port is the difficulty faced by ships to dock at the current berthing area during certain monsoons. MPL stated the port development project would provide a safe berthing area for ships.
