Maldives and Bahrain discuss future trade and investment opportunities

The Maldives and Bahrain have future trade and investment opportunities between both countries. The discussions took place during a visit by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB).

During the visit, President Solih met with the Deputy Prime Minister and the Chairman of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa. At the meeting, President Solih noted that the Bahrain Telecommunications Authority (Batelco) is a majority shareholder in Dhiraagu, the largest public company and telecommunications operator in the Maldives, and stated that the company has positively impacted the country’s economy. He also welcomed Bahrain’s decision to grant the Maldives sovereignty over the data of its beneficiaries in Bahrain-based data centres.

Furthermore, President Solih praised the measures taken by Bahrain in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also reflected on the response measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also discussed future trade and investment opportunities and potential areas of collaboration between the two countries. The ministers from both sides engaged in discussions on avenues of further cooperation.

Additionally, President Solih was given a presentation on the operations of the company. He also attended a dinner with First Lady Fazna Ahmed which was hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid.

The EDB is an investment promotion agency responsible for attracting investment into Bahrain and supporting initiatives that enhance the investment climate.
