Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem has expressed concern over the challenges in conducting health research. He made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony to launch the Compendium of Health Research in Maldives 2018-2021.
At the ceremony, Minister Naseem said conducting research is necessary to develop the health sector, treat and prevent diseases, and maintain good health. He noted the high level of research conducted to control and overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, Minister Naseem said the Ministry of Health has always prioritised conducting national-level research, highlighting the research bulletin which is published every year. He also said research is conducted every three years to determine the high-priority areas, adding that the health research areas for 2022-2025 were announced earlier this year.
Furthermore, Minister Naseem said the aim is to increase the number of health research and allow an environment in which research can be easily conducted in the country. He highlighted the challenges in conducting research such as the lack of experts but expressed confidence that progress can be made. He added that it is the health ministry’s responsibility to provide more opportunities and funding while colleges, universities, and the private sector have a key role in conducting the research.
Regarding the Compendium of Health Research, Minister Naseem said it was the first time such a book has been released in the Maldives and he praised the researchers who contributed. He expressed hope that the book will encourage the research community in the country.
