Gov't notes biggest obstacle is lack of fair prices for local produce

Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has said the biggest obstacle faced by farmers is the lack of fair prices for local produce. He made the remarks while speaking at the official ceremony held in Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, to commemorate National Farmers’ Day and World Food Day 2022.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Hussain Rasheed stated the government is working towards solving the issues pertinent to the lack of fair prices for local produce. He mentioned the government formed a 100% government-owned company in 2020 named Agro National Corporation Private Limited (AgroNat) in an effort to solve such issues. He added that many islands in the Maldives are inherently saline and farming on such land is a major challenge for the agricultural sector.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also attended the official ceremony held to mark National Farmers’ Day and World Food Day in Kaashidhoo. At the ceremony, President Solih presented commemorative plaques to the nine recipients who had provided outstanding services to the agricultural field. Following the event, he attended a special banquet hosted to mark National Farmer's Day and World Food Day.
