COVID-19 cases increase in the Maldives

The Maldives is recording an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed two COVID-19 patients were hospitalised in the first week of October while 25 patients were hospitalised in the first week of November. The weekly statistics show that the number of COVID-19 cases has also been increasing each week. As such, the number of COVID-19 cases reached 40 in the first month of October and 90 in the first week of November.

The statistics show that the largest number of COVID-19 cases were reported in the Greater Male’ Region. As such, 19 cases were recorded in the first week of October while 43 cases were recorded in the first week of November. Additionally, 45 cases were recorded in resorts and industrial zones in the first week of November and the total number of cases has risen to 185,454. HPA revealed that an 86-year-old woman died last week while being treated at the Hulhumale’ COVID-19 facility.

The statistics also show that 399,140 individuals have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 385,050 have received the second dose. A total of 167,132 individuals have received the first booster dose and 1,381 have received the second booster dose.

Furthermore, HPA urged Maldivians to take preventive measures due to the increase of seasonal diseases such as dengue fever. The relevant authorities have highlighted the importance of avoiding crowded areas and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.
