Contractor to upgrade waste management centres in Fonadhoo, Muli

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has contracted Lyco Construction Company Private Limited to upgrade the waste and resource management centres in Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll, and Muli in Meemu Atoll.

The agreement was signed by Deputy Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Mohamed Ansaar and Managing Director of Lyco Construction Company Mohamed Riyaz. Under the agreement, Lyco Construction Company will be upgrading the waste and resources management centres in Fonadhoo for USD175,000 and the centre in Muli for USD273,000. The company is expected to upgrade the centres within six months.

The project will develop the capacities of the centres in order to separate and isolate the renewable waste and treat perishable waste with an anaerobic digestion plant. The upgraded centres will reduce the accumulated waste in the islands and prevent emissions, thereby assisting in the development of the local economy and the preservation of the environment.

The upgraded centres will also include an office, bathrooms, a storage area, a waste disposal area, and a hazardous waste disposal area. The initiative is part of the Regional Waste Management Project funded by the World Bank Group under the International Development Association (IDA).
