Gov't says people with disabilities still face barriers to access services

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi has said the biggest difficulty faced by people with disabilities is barriers to accessing services. She made the remarks at the Riveli Forum 2022 held to ensure the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Speaking at the Riveli Forum, Minister Aishath said all agencies should work together and choose a common ground to ensure the rights of people with disabilities. The minister said the biggest difficulty people with disabilities face is the obstacles they face in accessing the services they need. She noted the barriers to accessing buildings and participating in general social activities.

Furthermore, Minister Aishath said that one of the most important tasks being done now is to provide necessary assistance to disabled people in the islands through the councils under the decentralisation policy. She said the government is working with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to provide assistance and training to people with disabilities.

Riveli Forum 2022 features products from 95 exhibitors in five categories, including agriculture, food processing, and artisanal handicrafts. The exhibition was held from November 14-15 at Dharubaaruge' convention centre.
