Claims that Maldives is facing bankruptcy are political: Finance Minister

Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has stated that claims that the Maldives is facing bankruptcy are made for political reasons to undermine the progress made by the administration.

On Twitter, Minister Ameer said that claims of the country going bankrupt are not new and are made for political reasons. He made the remark after Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed commented on how shameful it would be if the country were to face bankruptcy.

Highlighting the Maldives has seen the fastest recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister Ameer noted that the country faced more challenges during the pandemic than it is now but it was able to make a recovery due to the policies established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He added that all relevant data and statistics are available to the public.

Furthermore, Minister Ameer said the administration is continuing to take measures to manage the various challenges, such as the negative impact the Russia-Ukraine conflict has had on the global economy. He said that individuals who use their positions to spread fear by making claims about the country’s economy are doing so for political reasons. He reiterated that the Maldives has positive economic prospects.
