Fenaka begins fieldwork for water and sewerage system in Dhonfanu

Fenaka Corporation Limited has commenced the fieldwork for the water supply and sewerage system in Dhonfanu, Baa Atoll.

The government is making efforts to establish water supply and sewerage projects in five islands in Baa Atoll by the end of 2023. These include Dhonfanu, Kudarikilu, Kihaadhoo, Fulhadhoo, and Fehendhoo. Of these islands, fieldwork has begun in Kudarikilu and Dhonfanu.

President of Dhonfanu Council Ahmed Irshad said that the fieldwork for the water system is currently underway and the construction of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant on the island started earlier. He said along with the RO plant, tanks will be installed to store the water. He said the project also includes connecting houses to a main water network on the island.

Additionally, Irshad said the islanders use water for various purposes by using oxygen pumps to deodorize the water. He said the establishment of a safe water system will reduce the current expenditure on drinking and cooking water. He also said the biggest challenge for the island's economic development is the lack of these services.

Fenaka was contracted to establish water supply and sewerage systems in the five islands in 2021. Surveys have been completed for some of the islands, while the environmental impact assessment (EIA) is ongoing in Fulhadhoo. The surveys are being conducted on all islands by EPOCH Associates Private Limited and the work includes meeting locals and gaining their opinions on the projects.
