MTCC begins development of Gahdhoo harbour

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun the development of the harbour in Gahdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

MTCC stated that the work to close the existing harbour channel is currently ongoing and that the first shipment of rock boulders has been delivered to the site.

The scope of the works includes dredging and excavation operations of 23,017cbm, construction of a 232m breakwater, a 35m revetment, a 320m quay wall, construction of a 320m scouring apron, a bridge, and installation of 1600sqm harbor pavement and harbor lights. MTCC is tasked with completing the project at a cost of USD2.8 million.

The residents of Gahdhoo have expressed concern that the harbour built by the previous administration is unusable. President of Gahdhoo Island Council Mohamed Ahmed said the harbour was built on the southern side of the island and that sand has accumulated in the area, making it difficult for vessels to navigate. He said the residents now use the 13-year-old harbour in the north, which is frequently used by fishermen to re-fill ice and fuel. He, however, said that part of the harbour is damaged and vessels find it difficult to load and unload goods due to congestion.
